What do you think?

I felt like writing tonight. Maybe this will turn into a story, maybe it's just a scene I had in my head. Either way, enjoy.

Morning
Anna lay in bed even though she could feel the sun behind her closed eyelids, thinking maybe if she didn’t accept that the sun was up, it wouldn’t be so. Her other “alarm” brought her a little closer to waking. She felt a pair of little eyes peeking at her over the edge of the bed. How she knew they were there, she couldn’t say. Maybe it was just a mom thing. She opened her eyes, sure enough, the little eyes were there…staring at her expectantly. It was time for “Mom” to report for duty. It was days like these she wished for someone to help her out with these tasks, the days when Mommy isn’t ready to get up yet.

She pulled herself out of bed, shoved her feet into her worn out slippers, and grabbed Lily’s tiny hand.
“Come on honey. Let’s go get some breakfast.”

“Okay Mom!”

Lily ran down the stairs ahead to the kitchen as Anna continued to try and wake up. She smiled at the happiness Lily could find in such simplicity. Her only care was whether or not they would have waffles or pancakes for breakfast that morning. If only Anna could escape her grown up thoughts for a while… Maybe she could, even if it was over sticky syrup and buttery pancakes. “Yes,” she thought, “I’ll escape over pancakes this morning.”

Anna’s life wasn’t incredibly hard, the life insurance helped with that, but time and tasks still wore on her since John died. When she got the call that there had been a building collapse, she rushed to the hospital. It wasn’t until she got there that she received the full extent of the horrible news. “I guess they didn’t want me to wreck my car on the way to the hospital.” She thought as she reflected. John had passed away in the ambulance. She always knew this was possible. Being a firefighter isn’t the safest thing to be. Somehow she always thought it wouldn’t happen to their little family, that by some miracle, the odds would be in her favor.

John was so proud of his work. He had saved lives and was grateful for every minute of it. That’s why she couldn’t bear to ask him to quit. He loved it too much, and she loved him too much. Helping others just was part of him. To take that away would be asking him to cut away a part of himself.

“Mom! Are you coming?” Lily called. The shout snapped her out of reminiscing and she headed downstairs to start breakfast. “Coming Lils!” she called. “I’ll be right there.” She wondered what today would bring. She knew, at least, that it would either start with waffles or with pancakes.
