Slight Hiatus

You may have noticed a slight hiatus on me keeping up on the blog in recent weeks. If you've been following me at all, this is due to a new addition to our family! We just love her! Her name is Sydney Rae. Here are some fun pictures and I'll write more soon, but I thought I'd better get these posted. :)

Holy Crap It's October!

So yesterday, as I was being poked and prodded by the phlebotomist at the doctor's office for my glucose test, I looked at the calendar. I can't believe it's already October! Life is going pretty well for us. We're just spending a lot of time together as a family and preparing for this new little one to come into the world. As far as how I'm feeling, that depends on the day. Most days, I do okay, but I'm definitely having to take it easier than I used to. I have to stop myself from over doing it. I have just over six weeks until my due date and, although I'm ready to be done being pregnant, I know she's not ready yet to come out and we're not ready yet for her to come out. It seems like there is so much to do.

Another realization hit me yesterday. I'm going to be a mother of TWO! How crazy is that! My mom and I went shopping for some baby items and, of course, Ethan was with us. As we were walking out to the car, I suddenly realized that I won't have the convenience of carting just one kid around for much longer. I wonder how that is going to go. We'll see I guess.

As far as Ethan goes, he is LOVING preschool. He loves his teacher and he loves going. In fact, a couple of weeks ago, we had to keep him home because he was sick. He asked about going to school every half hour because he was "better now" until 8:00 p.m. that night! I'm glad he loves school. We're working with him on the parts he struggles with, mostly not getting too overwhelmed by being around that many kids. It's a totally new experience for him, but he's showing improvement every day.

Also, I think...knock wood...that Ethan is finally potty trained. I'm sure we'll still have accidents, most kids do, but so far so good. I ran out of Pull-Ups last Thursday and by the time we got home from the circus it was too late to go get some. He slept in underwear that night and hasn't looked back. I'm so happy for him. He's starting to get more confidence in himself. I credit that largely to school. It really has helped him be more independent and come out of his shell. He has had to rely on himself more and not wait for mommy and daddy to help him with everything. He hasn't had an accident for at least 5 days...not one. Pretty amazing stuff. I'm SO excited. I was not looking forward to the possibility of cleaning baby poop and cleaning Ethan poop at the same time.

My life is a simple life. I get up, take care of my home, take care of my family, work, and love my family and friends. I may not have an exciting life, and to be honest most times I prefer it that way, but I really do love my life. We don't have fancy cars or lots of money, but we get by. We have what we need and a lot of what we want. I'm really grateful for that. I'm glad I have the life I have.

My Life Today...

Today has been kind of a lazy day for me, not really by choice. That one was made for me by the little (really huge) one in my belly. I've just been taking it easy. I went to a doctor's appointment today. I'm 31 weeks and still going strong. Baby's heartbeat sounded good and my blood pressure and everything is great. It's so nice to have a pregnancy where you actually feel halfway decent most of the time.

I'm getting excited for our little girl to get here. I'm excited for the new experiences I'll have this time around. I'm really excited for Ethan to be a big brother. I think he's really starting to understand what is happening thanks to Jenny having her baby. It kind of helped him realize that the baby does eventually come out of mommy's tummy.

Let's see...what else...Oh, I've been nesting like crazy, like cleaning things you wouldn't even think to clean on a regular basis. The other night I just HAD to clean underneath my bed. Weird. I don't think I'll ever get used to that compulsive nesting instinct when it happens. It's just so strange. Part of the nesting thing is the preparation thing. It's been driving me a little crazy that we don't have my office moved so we can put the nursery together yet, but I know we've got time. It will get done...hopefully.

I've been working on leaving things to the Lord lately. There are a couple of things I'm not quite sure about as far as getting things done and taken care of when the baby comes. I know that if we are righteous things will work out. I just have to remind myself of that every once in a while. I guess that's normal. Hormones magnify the urgency of knowing the "plan" though. I guess that's why they call it faith. You have to get from A to B somehow and you can't always plan the somehow. Sometimes you have to let the Lord work it out for you and be patient while he does that. Patience has never been something that is easy for me, but hopefully I'll learn it soon so I don't keep getting the patience trials.

I guess that's it for now. Not much else going on in our lives.

Until next time...

Ethan's Abstract Art

So, the other day I was on the phone and had gone into the other room to talk because, as you know, life in our house is not always quiet. Anyway, Dan comes up after a couple of minutes and asks, "Are you watching our son?" I said, "No, I thought he was with you. He hasn't even come in here." Dan proceeds to show me that Ethan has figured out how to use the scanner/copier in the office and has been making his own "abstract art." Dan thought I was helping him do it. It was really funny because Ethan was so proud of his creations that he was bringing them downstairs to show Dan what he had done, but he was only showing him the ones he deemed "good enough." Maybe we'll be rich someday with Ethan the artist.

We've Been Busy, It's Good To Be Home

August is usually a busy month for us. We usually have vacations during that time and we also have our wedding anniversary. This year, we started the month off with our annual week with the Hufstetler side of the family up at Bear Lake. We really had a good time. The last part of the week it got kind of cold out so we couldn't go swimming, but we still had fun.

Ethan especially loved playing with all of his cousins. It was so relaxing and nice to get away for a while. For the first time in about 8 years, Dan also got to spend the whole week up there with us. Usually he has had to work or, like last year, he had interviews for his new nursing job because he had just graduated. It was really nice just to have family time. Dan and I even got to go out on our own for our anniversary, which happened to fall in the middle of the week. Thanks to Aunt Chris and Mariah for watching Ethan for us. We went to lunch and had a nice drive around the lake.

On one of the last warm days I had taken Ethan down to the water just to wade and play a bit. I wasn't in my suit and neither was he. I figured if he got a little wet it would be okay. Well, it started out as a little wet...and then he tripped in a hole. The lake made the decision for us that he would be swimming. Since it was warm out, soon some of the neighbors walked down to the beach. Ethan ran up to meet them and said, "I'm going swimming!" The guy replied, "Do you like swimming?" Ethan said, "Yeah, I love to go swimming." He proceeded to integrate himself into their group and was about to head out into the deep water with them. I called him back and he started crying. I asked what was wrong and he said, "I lost my friends." It was a tragic moment. Sometimes I wish I could be like him, where everyone is my friend instantly.

Later in the week when it was colder out, we couldn't go swimming, but we had some fun riding on the four wheelers. Yes, I know I'm pregnant, but don't worry, I didn't go into labor and no babies were harmed. I was very careful and didn't go too fast. I can't say the same for Dan though.

We wrapped the week up with shakes at La Beau's in Garden City. I love their shakes! So yummy.

Here are some pictures from the week:

After Bear Lake, we were home for a few days and then Ethan and I headed up to East Canyon Resort to spend some time with my family. Dan wasn't able to come the first night because of work, but he was able to come the second day and spend a couple of days with us. I love it up there. I've been going to this resort since I was about three or four years old. My Grandma and Grandpa Page have had a time share there basically since it was built. They wanted a place for all of us to get together as a family and just have fun together. I have so many memories of swimming with my cousins, playing card games, watching movies, hanging out at the condos, and later going hot tubbing when we were teenagers. I look forward to going every year. In fact, Dan and I hope to be able to get a time share up there sometime in the near future. I want Ethan to have the same kind of wonderful memories.

The first day we were there, we basically headed straight for the pool. Jenn and the kids, Melisa and her kids, and Scott and Kerri and their kids also came up for the day. Josh and Elisa were also up staying and Elisa came to the pool with us. It was then that I think Ethan became a bit attached to her. He wanted to be with her the whole rest of the time we were there. It was really cute. It was so fun to go swimming. Ethan was a little nervous at first, but Jenn let him borrow Zach's life jacket when he wasn't using it. That really helped. I even called Dan at home to have him bring Ethan's jacket up the next day.

We also had a fun day up at Park City with the family. That's another tradition that we have when going up to East Canyon. We always go up and ride the Alpine Slide and shop a bit. We also ate a yummy dinner up at Ruby Tuesday in Park City. Ethan got to ride on a couple of rides while he was waiting to go on the Alpine Coaster with Grandpa. He rode the airplanes and he also went on the carousel with Grandpa. The Alpine Coaster is like the Alpine Slide, except it's a roller coaster, you ride up in the actual car that is hooked to a track instead of the tram. Ethan loved it! Grandpa liked it too, but I think he was still a little woozy from the carousel. I swear that was the longest and fastest carousel I have ever seen!

We spent the night at the resort that night and it rained much of Friday. We headed home late Friday night, since the condo my parents had gotten was only for Wednesday and Thursday, and Ethan and I headed up to spend the day on Saturday so we could swim a bit. It's only a 45 minute drive up the canyon, so I figured, why not. He had a really fun time and this time Nick and Grandma got to come swimming with us. He thought that was great. He gained a lot more confidence having the life jacket on. I want to put him in swimming lessons next summer, but it was so nice not to have to hold on to him for dear life the entire time we were in the pool.

Here are some pictures from East Canyon:

All in all, we had a great couple of weeks, but it sure is good to be home!

Exhibitionism Anyone?

One of the weird quirks that Ethan has recently exhibited is his need to remove his clothing at will. Thankfully, he hasn't done this in a store yet, but he has done it at my mom's house, at a friend's house, and at my grandmother's house. I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I never thought I'd have to utter the words, "Big boys keep their pants on." I swear sometimes we say the weirdest things as mothers. I find myself taken aback at times thinking, "Did I seriously just say that to my kid?"

We went to my Grandma Page's house on Friday for the big Pioneer Day barbecue and Ethan decided that his pants needed to come off while playing in the dirt. Thankfully, he left his underwear on! Earlier in the week he decided he was done swimming while we were at a friend's house and proceeded to come in the house naked. It's interesting. I guess it's his way of showing that he's a big boy and he can take off his clothes by himself. I would just rather he not do it in public.

Neglecting My Blog

July is always a busy month for us. Two holidays, plus my birthday, plus preparing or going on vacations that usually happen during this time takes up a lot of time. I realized it has been almost a month since I posted, so I decided I had better get on that!

The Fourth was great, as usual. We had a great time the night before at the Granite High fireworks in South Salt Lake with my parents and Josh and Elisa. Dan was working so he wasn't able to go. They also had an open house at the school that night for all alumni of Granite. The school is closing and 2009 was the last graduating class. I got to walk around in the halls a bit and say goodbye to my school. I'll always be a Mighty Farmer though! It was really weird to be in those halls again. It brought back so many memories. After the walk through the school, we had some yummy food at the little fair they hold before the fireworks. Ethan got to get up inside a real fire truck. He was really excited about that! We really enjoyed the fireworks.

On the actual Fourth, we did the usual things. Ethan and I went to the Kaysville parade with family. I had to hike all the way to the porta potties twice, but at least Ethan didn't have any accidents! I think he kind of thought it was cool to go in them. After the parade, we had lunch at my Aunt Sharlene's house and the kids swam in the kiddie pool in her backyard for like three hours. They loved the water. Ethan really enjoyed all the kids his age to play with. The night ended with the time honored tradition of going to the Davis High fireworks in Kaysville. It was really fun. I was kind of sad Dan couldn't be there due to a screw up with his schedule, but we made the best of it.

Things were pretty uneventful after the holiday, until my birthday. I really had a great day. Dan cleaned the house for me and he took Ethan shopping to get me something special they could give to me together. This year, it was a card that played music, which Ethan had to show me about 50 times throughout the day, and The Office seasons 1 through 4 on DVD. I loved it. I also went in the afternoon for a bit of pampering and got a pedicure. It was so relaxing. We topped the night off with dinner at the Olive Garden. It really was a great day, probably one of the best birthdays I've had.

As for the pregnancy, things are still going really well. I've actually lost 2-in. off my hips since the beginning of the pregnancy. I'm not trying to lose weight, but it's happening anyway. What a weird problem to have. The doctor says everything is good though. The baby is still growing and she's the right size and everything. Her heartbeat is really good as well, so that's definitely a good thing.

Now...on to today. Some people in the family went to the parade in downtown Salt Lake, but I'm pregnant, Dan worked last night so he wouldn't be going, and Ethan is 4, so I decided to opt out on that. We did go to Grandma Page's for some great barbecue though! Ethan had a great time watering her flowers and playing in the dirt. He also got to play with Dion, one of my cousin's foster kids, for a little while. They're the same age and they get along really well. He had a really great time. It was nice to sit and visit.

I'm sitting her now waiting for it to rain so it won't be so humid and I'm working in my office, a nice relaxing end to a fun day. I'll try not to let it be so long before I post again!

How Have We Been?

Good. Things are going pretty well at our house. Since I last posted my little boy turned four, he went in for his checkup for the year, Dan worked 63 hours in one week, we had a family reunion, and baby is still growing.

Ethan turned four on June 20. I can't believe he's already that old! He had a great time at his party. We invited all his little friends and I reserved the church, our house is not really built for parties, not a lot of room. Originally, we were going to have the party outside at the church because there is a lot of shade. Well, for the first time in four years, it poured on his birthday. I was so glad we had a backup plan of the cultural hall inside. When I was first looking at party locations, I wanted to get a pavilion at a park. As luck would have it, all pavilions in all of Salt Lake were booked for every weekend in June. At the time, I was disappointed, but the joke was on them. We were nice and dry and they were huddled under the pavilion with no backup plan.

Here are some pictures from the party:

Last week, Ethan went in for his checkup. All went well! This is the first time he hasn't been scared to go to the doctor. He talks about the doctor all the time and how they make you feel better. I didn't realize it at the time, but the broken toe incident really helped him understand that they're there to help you. Ethan is growing normally. He's still really big for his age, but at least he's proportional. It was funny, the doctor checked his ears. To get him to hold still, I told him the doctor had to see if there were any monsters in them. After the verdict of no monsters in his ears, he had to check the doctor's ears too to see if there were "monsters in there." I asked him if there were any in there and he said, "Yeah, scary ones." It was funny. He also had to look for his heartbeat using the stethoscope and wanted to know what all the doctors gadgets were. He even wanted to sit up on the exam table. It was really funny.

I'm SO glad last week is done and we are on to the nice holiday week. Dan worked a ton of hours last week. He was so tired. It was great for us to get the overtime though. He works so hard for everything to make our family secure. I really appreciate that. I know it's hard for him sometimes, but he always just does the most he can, which is usually way more than I would ever be able to do!

We also had a family reunion this past week. It was for the Perkins side of the family, which is Dan's grandmother's family on his mom's side. Since it was his mom's family's turn to plan and organize the reunion it was up to us to take over. Dan's sister, Lauri, spearheaded the operation. We all had a great time. A bunch of us made some things for the family raffle and I won a baby afghan that my sister-in-law, Lisa, crocheted. I crocheted some baby sweaters/hat sets and a place mat set. It was our first pink thing for the baby! I was excited. They had a cake walk, games, a playground for the kids, and food and visiting. It was a really great time. Ethan was so tired by the end of the day!

Here are some pics from the reunion:

Since we were all together, Dan's brothers and sisters and some of the nieces and nephews decided to go to a movie. We got a couple of sitters for the littlest ones and off we went to Transformers. I noticed about halfway through the movie that the baby was kicking a lot. I finally realized that she wasn't kicking...she was jumping, every time there was a huge crash or explosion. She may come out shell shocked. We shall see.

Anyway, there was a lot going on these past couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to a wonderful July 4 with family this weekend. It's one of my favorite holidays. We're going to the Kaysville parade in the morning, barbecue in the afternoon at my aunt's house, and then fireworks in Kaysville that night. Should be a great time!

Until next time...

Ethan's George

We went out to Debi's today and took advantage of the face painting being offered at Kraver's, a little ice cream/diner type place by her house. Ethan was so excited to get his "George.". He even sat still for it.

So It's A...

GIRL! Dan and I went in for the sonogram today and everything looks great. Baby is developing healthy and everything. Also, we found out that we will be having a little girl!

It's so amazing seeing that little person up there on the ultrasound screen. I mean, I've been feeling her move around some, but to know that she's really, really there is just beyond belief. It's such a miraculous event that pregnancy and birth are even possible in this world. Looking up at that screen as the sonographer went through explaining everything just left me in utter amazement. I feel so blessed.

I'm not going to bore you with a ton of sonogram photos, because most people don't know what they're looking at anyway. ;) But, here are a couple of the good ones.
This first one is a straight on look at the face.

This second one is the obligatory boy or girl picture. For a boy, his parts are fairly obvious in the sonogram. For a girl, they look for three white dots/lines grouped together. I've circled them there. This view is from the bottom of the pelvis.

Dan and I are so incredibly excited to be welcoming a new member to our family. We're so happy!

How I Feel Today...

I'm feeling so excited today, so I thought I'd post. Tomorrow is the big day, the big ultrasound. We're opting to find out if the baby is a boy or a girl, so it's extra exciting for me. It makes it all so much more real. I've been starting to feel the baby move inside of me over the last couple of weeks. I don't really remember feeling Ethan this early, but I guess since I now kind of know what I'm feeling it's easier for me to tell when it's the baby moving.

I'm so excited to have another little one to hold in my arms. We've been waiting and praying for a long time. I know there are others close to me who haven't had this blessing yet. I know they will. I think of them often. Until then, they can hold the baby as much as they want. :)

The inevitable question of "What are we going to name the baby?" has been coming up more and more over the past few weeks. There are a couple of names I like, but I'm not quite sure yet, partially because I don't know if it's going to be a boy or a girl yet. When I ask Dan, it's funny, it's like he picks whatever random word pops into his head. For me, the name thing is a much deeper thing. I like names, especially middle names, to be family names if possible or have some other sort of special meaning. With Ethan, it was easy. Daddy's name is Daniel, which is also a bible name, which also goes well with Ethan. This one...well, I hope that we can figure it out. I know we will eventually.

Well, I guess I'll post more tomorrow, after I've made the phone calls to family and close friends first, to reveal what baby will be. Stay tuned.

My Great, Great Uncle

My great, great uncle, Wilford C. Wood was recently honored by President Monson.

An article appeared in the Church News about him. Very cool.

http://www.mormontimes.com/studies_doctrine/church_history/?id=9127

I've included the article below. You can go to the direct link to see pictures, etc.

Temples, furs, shotguns and the saving of Mormon history
By Michael De Groote
Mormon Times
Published: 2009-06-11 00:41:00

Wilford C. Wood was frustrated. He had approval from the First Presidency of the LDS Church to buy a portion of the Nauvoo Temple block for $1,000 -- not a small amount in 1937. The Bank of Nauvoo, however, insisted that $1,000 was just the opening bid amount. Although he was an experienced negotiator, he couldn’t make any headway. Then, he felt the spirit of Joseph Smith fill the room.

Wood was ahead of his time in his love for the past. Long before it even occurred to other people that Mormon history sites would be worth preserving, he was actively, tirelessly and relentlessly pursuing the purchase and preservation of key LDS Church history sites -- places where Mormons believe heaven reached down and touched earth through revelation to the prophet Joseph Smith Jr. “Brother Wood spent 50 years collecting and preserving everything he could that was connected with life of Joseph Smith,” President Thomas S. Monson said recently at a dinner that honored Wood’s life. “Brother Wood was not motivated by money … he did it for one purpose: He loved the Prophet Joseph and the Book of Mormon and he wanted to help preserve the things and places that had been part of Joseph’s life.”

Sheila Price, a granddaughter of Wilford C. Wood, said, “When my grandpa started to collect, nobody was interested in collecting anything about Joseph Smith or LDS Church history, so he was a little bit ahead of his time.” Wood’s love for Joseph Smith and LDS Church history grew on his mission in 1915 to the Northern States Mission. “My grandfather gave away so many copies of the Book of Mormon he was given the nickname ‘Book of Mormon Wood,’ ” said Wilford W. Cannon, another grandchild. Wood knew about the attempts of his mission president, German E. Ellsworth, to acquire the Hill Cumorah. “He thought that the church ought to own more sites,” Cannon said.

Wood decided to do something about it himself. “Fortunately for the church,” President Monson said, “Wilford felt the need to preserve the things of the past.”When Wood began looking for church history sites, the LDS Church did not own any site where a section of the Doctrine and Covenants had been revealed, according to Kenneth Mays, a trustee with the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation.

A furrier by trade, Wood took regular automobile trips to the East Coast to sell furs. Those trips were punctuated by side trips to church history sites where he identified potential purchases and become friends with the owners.Wood’s passion was deep -- and often ahead of what the LDS Church could afford to buy. So more often than not, Wood bought property on his own and waited until the church was interested. Then he would sell it at or below his own costs.Wood’s patience was as deep as his passion. If the owners were not ready to sell, he would wait and watch. He advertised in the papers and watched them intently for real estate notices or obituaries. “He subscribed to all the weekly newspapers from every little town that ever had anything to do with church history,” Price said. “He had this huge mailbox, and we’d go out to get the mail for him and you would find a stack a foot tall.” If you wouldn’t sell to him, maybe your children would.

NAUVOO TEMPLE BLOCK

When part of the Nauvoo Temple block was put up for sale in 1937, Wood jumped on it.

He gained approval from President David O. McKay, then second counselor to President Heber J. Grant, to pay the Bank of Nauvoo’s asking price of $1,000. “They said, ‘Mr. Wood you don’t understand, it’s an auction. The opening bid is $1,000. We expect to sell the property for much more than that,’” Cannon said. They took a break in negotiations. “When they finished their break, Grandpa said he felt the spirit of Joseph Smith come into the room,” Cannon said. “With that support he felt a little bold, and he said to the cashier of the bank, ‘Do you expect us to pay an exorbitant price for the blood of a martyred prophet? You know this land rightfully belongs to the Mormon people.’ ” The bank relented and told Wood they would arrange to sell it for $900.

He made another purchase of Nauvoo Temple land only a few months later -- this time on his own with the hope the church would buy it later. He made at least five more purchases over 15 years, or three-fourths of the total temple block.

ARTIFACTS

Wood didn’t just acquire property. He also searched for church historical artifacts. “Grandpa was quite the negotiator, and he made friends as soon as he walked through the door,” Price said.“Sometimes he would go into an antique store, and he would pick up just little stuff, and then he would put a pile of things on the counter and say, ‘How much for all of this?’ And somewhere in there would be a first-edition copy of the Book of Mormon or something valuable,” Cannon said.“And he’d pay $3 for it,” Price said.“Since he was stopping by regularly, he didn’t want them to know what he was interested in and jack up the price,” Cannon said.“He was famous for the barter system. Back-and-forth. Back-and-forth,” Price said.Wood’s hillside business and home soon were filled with artifacts. It literally became a museum he called “Mother’s Home of Learning.” President David O. McKay dedicated it in 1961.

UNCUT SHEETS OF THE 1830 BOOK OF MORMON

Some of Wood’s greatest finds were the uncut sheets of the first edition of the Book of Mormon. His quest began, according to Price, in the 1950s when a young missionary from California told Wood about a woman he had met. She told the missionaries she did not need their Book of Mormon because she already had one. She showed the missionaries a wooden box that contained folded, but uncut, large sheets of the first edition of the Book of Mormon.“Grandpa packed furs. Grandma packed clothes,” Price said. “They jumped in their station wagon and they drove to Santa Barbara.”The woman allowed Wood to see the box. At first she was reluctant to let him unscrew the glass box top to see the sheets, but soon she warmed up, and he was able to verify what they were. Each sheet contained 16 pages -- 8 on each side.

How did she get the sheets? The printer, E.B. Grandin, had given the sheets to a banker named Pliny Sexton as collateral for a personal loan. Grandin couldn't pay and so Sexton kept the sheets. Eventually Sexton put them in the box. When Sexton died, his son inherited the sheets, then Sexton's grandaughter. The granddaughter married a duke. When she died, the duke inherited the sheets and then married the family maid. "Your typical soap opera," Price said. When the duke died, the maid inherited the sheets and moved to California where eventually she was visited by Wood. "Grandpa offered the lady a very beautiful fur coat, less than $1,000, and he walked out of there with the uncut sheets, the printer’s copy of the Book of Mormon,” Price said.

PRESIDENT MONSON AND WOOD

Wood wanted more people to see an original 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon and decided to print some himself using the uncut sheets to re-create them. President Monson, who was then assistant general manager of the Deseret News Press, helped Wood. Wood titled the reprint “Joseph Smith Begins His Work.”While printing the book, large stacks of unfinished pages were to be left in the printing plant over the weekend.

Wood (on right in white shirt) published "Joseph Smith Begins His Work," a reprint of the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon. The man behind Wood is unidentified. Photo: courtesy Wilford C. Wood family “The plant was securely locked, and we had security assigned to guard it. Brother Wood, however, did not want anything to happen to those pages,” President Monson said. “He suggested the bright idea of members of his high priests group to come to the plant and set guard over the large stacks, fearing that something might happen to them before they could be printed on the other side. Initially, he wanted these high priests to bring shotguns ‘just in case.’ I told him he could bring his high priests but not their guns.”

Wood died relatively suddenly at the age of 74 on Jan. 17, 1968. “He hadn’t planned on dying,” Price said.It was as an energetic life interrupted. 'WHAT A MAN'“I’ve been a volunteer historical guide, taking busloads of people to many of these sites (Wood acquired),” Richard N.W. Lambert, vice chairman of the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation, said. “And when I contemplate, just in my own experience, the number of people … whose lives have been touched and sometimes the direction of their lives has been changed by going to these places and thinking about the events that transpired there. And for many of these places we have Wilford Wood to thank for it.”“He was one of a kind. But what a man. What a man was Wilford Wood,” President Monson said. “I think God threw away the mold from which Wilford C. Wood was made.”The man who spent his life and his fortune in preserving church history had now become church history himself.

14 Weeks And All Is Well!

Well, I had my 14 week appointment with the doctor yesterday. Everything looks good at this point. Baby's heart rate was at about 140 beats per minute, which is great. I was excited to hear the baby. It's always such an awe inspiring experience.

As far as how I'm feeling, I'm doing okay most days. Morning sickness hit me late in this pregnancy. Prior to 12 weeks, I was mostly just nauseous all the time, not really getting sick much. After that 12 week mark, baby decided to be finicky with what I could and could not eat (and when I could eat, and how much I could eat). Hopefully that will pass soon. I actually lost 2 lbs. from my first doctor's appointment so that brings my total pregnancy weight gain to +1 lb. That's good for me though. I have lots of "food storage" for the baby. Hopefully he or she will take advantage of it.

Another good thing happened at the doctor as well. I got to schedule my ultrasound appointment. It's the "big" one where we'll find out if we're having a girl or a boy. It's scheduled for mid-June, so I'll keep you posted!

As far as everything else in the pregnancy, things seem to be going well. I'm just having to slow down a bit on some days. Ethan is kind of getting it now. I asked him where the baby was yesterday and he said it was in my tummy. I guess we're making progress. The last time I asked, he said it was in my toe. He has such a silly sense of humor.

I'm excited to be this far along in my pregnancy. I'm surprised that I have my ultrasound in just four weeks! That's so crazy that we're already almost halfway!

Until next time...

Why The Hiatus?

I used to update my blog a lot more regularly than I have been over the last couple of months, especially when talking about the infertility stuff. Why have I been slow to update? Well, the long answer is, there have been a lot of things going on with me that I haven't been ready to share here yet. The short answer is, I'm pregnant!

After being diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) in January, my reproductive endocrinologist put me on Metformin and Clomid to try to get me to ovulate. Well, it worked and I got pregnant the first month on it! Pretty amazing stuff.

The reason why I decided to start sharing now is because I'm over 12 weeks along now. I'm in the second trimester.

Dan and I are extremely happy that we have a new little one coming to our family. I'm due November 15.

I haven't been feeling too awful. Just the normal tiredness and the nausea. It still isn't as bad as it was with Ethan though. So I'll keep posting as I know more, but things are looking good here.

Boys Will Be Boys

Well, we've had our first emergency visit to the doctor. Last night was quite the adventure. I got into the car to visit my parents with Ethan and little did I know I'd be ending the night, rather late, after visiting the doctor.

Ethan was running and playing, as usual, and he knocked over a metal weight my dad uses to hold the garage door shut on windy days (the garage is one of those old fashioned lift up doors rather than roll ones). Well, he knocked it right on to his little foot. This, of course, caused blood to be everywhere and him to be screaming. When the bleeding wouldn't stop after I had put pressure for a couple of minutes, I called the Instacare and told them we were coming in.
Ethan was hurting so my dad drove us in his car and I sat in the back with him. I explained that we would go to the doctor to fix his foot. When we got to the clinic, we held him while we waited. He had cried so much, he actually fell asleep in my arms in the waiting room.

When we finally got back to see the doctor, they gave him some Motrin, cleaned out his foot, gave him a sucker, and decided that he needed an x-ray. We went to have the x-ray done and sure enough, he had fractured the tip of his big toe. You can't really see it too well, but the little dark line on the top of the x-ray is the fracture.

Thankfully, he didn't need stitches. After they irrigated the wound, which Ethan thought tickled, they found that it bled a lot, but wasn't very deep. They wrapped it, sent us home with some antibiotics, since the fracture was in such close proximity to the cut, and gave him a post op surgical shoe to wear for the next two to three weeks, or until he doesn't have any pain. What a night! By the end, I was so tired. Ethan seems to have bounced back today. He's still careful on his foot, but he has been good about wearing the shoe. His foot isn't hurting him so much today either so that's a good sign I guess.

I guess that's what you get when you have Hufstetler for your last name. I'm sure this will be the first in many visits over the years for various things.

Favorite Picture

I was looking through some of our pictures from over this past year and ran across one that I really love of Ethan. It was taken on Memorial Day Weekend 2008 when we went to visit my Grandpa and Grandma Cornia up in Idaho. He was having fun exploring in their pasture.

What am I doing up?

Good question. These days my sleep patterns are weird, some nights I sleep without a problem. Others, your guess is as good as mine. Whether it's hormones, being sick, or Ethan, my sleep has been interesting as of late...complete with really weird dreams. I won't miss those when they're gone. You know the kind, you wake up and go, "What the heck?!"

Today was a pretty good day for us. Daylight Saving Time happened, which wasn't so great, but we made it to church, a little late, but we still made it. I taught the primary class I was substituting for. Later, Ethan and I went over to Josh and Elisa's house to hang out for a bit. I also needed to give her a CD I made of the pics of us at the concert. Ethan has been begging to see Abby too. We watched Wall-E over there and had yummy brownies and ice cream.

Here's the kicker to my day. Ethan didn't have an accident all day today! I'm so proud and excited. It's so funny, the Pull-Ups that he was holding on to for dear life have now become a nuisance for him. He still isn't waking up dry after naps and in the mornings so I have still been using them then. The last two nights, he hasn't wanted the Pull-Up. He says, "I need underwear." So for the last two nights, he has worn the Pull-Up over his underwear. I asked him if that was okay. He seemed all right with it. Too funny. I can't wait until they're gone all together and we don't have to worry about diapers (because that's what Pull-Ups are) anymore. That's $30 a box that can go to something else fun...like clothes for Mommy.

What do you think?

I felt like writing tonight. Maybe this will turn into a story, maybe it's just a scene I had in my head. Either way, enjoy.

Morning
Anna lay in bed even though she could feel the sun behind her closed eyelids, thinking maybe if she didn’t accept that the sun was up, it wouldn’t be so. Her other “alarm” brought her a little closer to waking. She felt a pair of little eyes peeking at her over the edge of the bed. How she knew they were there, she couldn’t say. Maybe it was just a mom thing. She opened her eyes, sure enough, the little eyes were there…staring at her expectantly. It was time for “Mom” to report for duty. It was days like these she wished for someone to help her out with these tasks, the days when Mommy isn’t ready to get up yet.

She pulled herself out of bed, shoved her feet into her worn out slippers, and grabbed Lily’s tiny hand.
“Come on honey. Let’s go get some breakfast.”

“Okay Mom!”

Lily ran down the stairs ahead to the kitchen as Anna continued to try and wake up. She smiled at the happiness Lily could find in such simplicity. Her only care was whether or not they would have waffles or pancakes for breakfast that morning. If only Anna could escape her grown up thoughts for a while… Maybe she could, even if it was over sticky syrup and buttery pancakes. “Yes,” she thought, “I’ll escape over pancakes this morning.”

Anna’s life wasn’t incredibly hard, the life insurance helped with that, but time and tasks still wore on her since John died. When she got the call that there had been a building collapse, she rushed to the hospital. It wasn’t until she got there that she received the full extent of the horrible news. “I guess they didn’t want me to wreck my car on the way to the hospital.” She thought as she reflected. John had passed away in the ambulance. She always knew this was possible. Being a firefighter isn’t the safest thing to be. Somehow she always thought it wouldn’t happen to their little family, that by some miracle, the odds would be in her favor.

John was so proud of his work. He had saved lives and was grateful for every minute of it. That’s why she couldn’t bear to ask him to quit. He loved it too much, and she loved him too much. Helping others just was part of him. To take that away would be asking him to cut away a part of himself.

“Mom! Are you coming?” Lily called. The shout snapped her out of reminiscing and she headed downstairs to start breakfast. “Coming Lils!” she called. “I’ll be right there.” She wondered what today would bring. She knew, at least, that it would either start with waffles or with pancakes.

Rascal Flatts 2009

We had SO much fun! Jenny, Julia, Elisa, and I went to dinner at Crown Burger first and then walked over to the ESA for the concert. When we originally got there, we didn't have seats together, but we were able to get upgraded and got to sit together...on the front row. We were on the side, but still! It was awesome! We sang, we danced, we screamed! Julia even ended up with a couple of balloons from the show and both Julia and Elisa got to give Gary high five! We had so much fun! Here are some pics from the show.

What A Great Day!

Today was truly one of those days that just went well. Debi invited us to go to a free movie today at the dollar theater her uncle owns in Sandy. It was so fun! We went to see Bolt, which I wasn't sure Ethan would be able to sit through, but he actually did really well. He enjoyed the movie and the free popcorn! Thanks Debi for a great time!

Ethan did so well with the potty thing today. I'm sure there will be good days and bad days until he finally gets it down, but today was definitely a good day. Basically, my strategy is still underwear all day, except naps and bed time, using the potty box as a reward for going, and asking him like every five seconds until he gets annoyed if he has to go potty. I'll wear him down eventually!

Oh, the other thing...I get to go see Rascal Flatts tomorrow night! I'm so excited. It's funny, it's kind of the week of concerts. The Celine concert that was supposed to be in November got rescheduled for this week so I get two concerts in one week. How cool is that! I'll update more on those later. It should be really fun tomorrow. I'm going with my sister-in-law, Elisa, and Jenny. Jenny is also bringing her daughter, Julia. Should be a really fun time.

Where Am I Now?

Well, not a whole lot is going on here. I think the Clomid is working. I've cleaned my house top to bottom over the last three days, always a sign of the ever present nesting instinct I get when I'm about to ovulate. I got my blood test results back and they pretty much confirmed that I've got PCOS. At least I know for sure what's going on and we can work on correcting it now.

We had a lot of fun this weekend. We got a new dresser and some nightstands at IKEA with our tax return. We actually have room in our dresser to store our clothing! Imagine that! I love that store! Dan and I also went out for Valentine's Day for the first time in like 4 years. He always has to work. We even went to a girl movie, "He's Just Not That Into You." It was really nice to get out and have time just to ourselves.

On the potty training front, I'm still fighting the war. I haven't surrendered yet. Ethan figured out the loophole in the whole Pull-Ups over the underwear thing and started to not care again. I just got fed up and decided to only do Pull-Ups at night and naps. That's it. He has been pretty good about going in the potty. Fingers crossed this isn't going to take too much longer.

Another good thing that his happening...I think, is me working on some of my control issues. Yes, I know that being the one to add up the numbers and send out checks after we get paid will not save the world, but it has been something that I have had to control for far too long. We're working together on it now instead of me just telling Dan how it is. That should be an adventure in and of itself. I am a control freak. Maybe now I'll just be one in recovery.

Adjustments

This week thus far has been full of adjustments. I started my cycle on Sunday so I went in on Tuesday for my blood draw and glucose test. I hate the glucose test! You have to fast and then drink this orange soda that basically is like drinking syrup. I made it to the doctor though, thanks to Dan. I got my blood taken and now we're waiting. I should have the results soon. The tested me for a few things, basically they want to see where I'm at with my hormones. I also started on Metformin on Tuesday. It's a diabetes drug that will help with PCOS symptoms and get my body to do what it's supposed to do. However, you have to work up to the full dose, gradually working it in because, as I found out the hard way, you'll get sick if you don't. It's bearable, but just barely. I talked to the nurse this morning and she gave me instructions on how to ramp up the dose and how quickly to do it. I think it will help.

Also, I'm a genius! I've been working on potty training Ethan for a long time. My big problem was that he just doesn't care if he sits in his own filth. Pull-Ups and diapers are too comfortable and underwear leaked everywhere when we tried it and made him feel bad because he made a mess on the floor. Solution? Put the underwear UNDER the Pull-Ups. That way he can feel when he has had an accident and start to care that he's wet/dirty, but I'm not scrubbing the floors/couches/rugs and washing clothing every five minutes. I think this may work. I'm hoping. Maybe some of you who are having similar troubles with potty training could try this and let me know how it works for you. So far so good here. Ethan has the boosted confidence of being a "big boy" by wearing underwear, but he's not getting upset and discouraged when he has an accident. I think that was the major hurdle for us. He didn't want to try because he didn't think he could do it. He just needs some confidence. I'll let you know how this latest approach works as the days roll on for us.

Finally, I'm excited to be basically over my cold! This ends the week plus quarantine. I can finally go out and have some fun again. Ethan and I are going to hang out with Jenny and the kids tomorrow. He has really missed them. I think it will be fun. I've missed hanging out with Jenny too! I'm just happy to be healthy again.

Where Have I Been?

Well, let's see. It's been a little while since I posted. Part of that is because I've been sick all week long! Yay for me! Thank goodness for takeout...I mean seriously, when you are sick you just don't want to do anything, but there's this thing...kids like to eat their meals. Needless to say our family took full advantage of takeout this week. Hopefully things are back to normal soon. I'm still sick, but I'm not hacking up a lung, so we're good here.

On the fertility front, things are in a waiting pattern as of now. I think I'll be starting my cycle soon so that means I get to go in for that blood draw sometime this week. We're doing it on day 3 to see what my hormone levels are. I also get to take the glucose test. I hate that test. I don't think I'll be able to drink orange soda for a while after I do it. That stuff is NASTY!

Jenny and I were talking about the whole PCOS diagnosis thing the other day. She brought up the fact that maybe it was something that needed to happen. I tend to agree. While it's not fun dealing with the issues, I'm sure I've had these issues for quite some time, not just recently. I would've had to deal with them sooner or later. PCOS can cause other problems down the road like a higher risk for uteran cancer, diabetes, etc. I don't want to go down that road. I'd much rather manage it now and avoid that whole thing. I think I am blessed.

A lot of times, people only think they're "blessed" if good things are happening to them. As I've grown older, and I hope wiser, I've come to see that's not the case at all. We're blessed all the time, even when things are bad. Heavenly Father is always there to help us and lift us when we need it. He blesses us in the good times, but he also blesses us in the bad times. I think I'm blessed to have this diagnosis. At least I know what's wrong and I can attempt to fix it. I will be healthier when all of this is finished. It's like the bible says, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." (Eccl. 3:1). Is it my season yet? Well, not quite yet, but there are steps to be taken in everything. This is just a step along in my life. It's not my WHOLE life.

Speaking of life, today we finally got out of the house! We had a family party at Dan's dad's house with the whole Hufstetler side of the family. We also had a baby shower for my niece who is due in a few weeks. She got so many cute things for the baby! I crocheted a sweater and hat for her. It's similar to the one I did for Rachel's baby, but the flowers are a bit different. Anyway, it was nice to be out of the house and hanging out with the family. I'm grateful that they've truly become my family. I feel comfortable around them. I love them. They love me and have accepted me, which is a great feeling. I know people don't always have warm fuzzies for their in laws, so it's really nice for us. Ethan had a great time. He loves playing with his cousins. He played so hard he actually fell asleep on the way home. It was so nice. I just brought him home and put him to bed.

All in all, it was a good day. I was blessed today.

Looking Forward

Well, the doctor's visit was yesterday. I have to say, I'm feeling pretty okay about things...not great, but okay. The doctor thinks, based on my clinical symptoms, that I have some form of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). We'll know more when we do some blood testing throughout my cycle, but it's looking like that's what I have. Basically, PCOS is a problem where your pancreas makes too much insulin because your body isn't processing it correctly. This, in turn, makes your testosterone levels rise and your estrogen and progesterone levels decrease, thus causing fertility problems. There are treatments to be done for it. One I'm already doing, taking better care of myself by eating well, trying to lose weight, and exercising. There is also a medication, actually a diabetes medication, that we'll be trying as well.

Speaking of weight loss...I lost another two pounds this last week! That puts my grand total from when I started on January 5 up to 10 pounds. It's so exciting. Hopefully I can keep things up. I'm doing my part of it, making sure to eat right, making sure to get to the gym, etc. Hopefully that continues to work.

As for me, I had a good cry last night. I'm sure there will be more tears in the future. My tears were not necessarily because of this diagnosis...I had suspicions of it before we even went to the doctor...it was more the fact that I even had to go down this road. Right now, I'm doing okay, but I'm sure I'll have good days and bad days. I know with continued faith in the Lord I can make it through. I really hope that a baby is at the end of all of this, but if there isn't, I'm incredibly lucky to have Ethan.

Now, we're looking forward, inducing a cycle, getting blood tests, doing the glorious glucose test (blah), and starting new medications. At the end of this, I'll at least be healthier than I am now, and that's always a good thing.

The Road Ahead

Have you ever been on a path in life afraid to move forward? Right now, that's where I am. I'm living unaware of what is going on within my body. I know the symptoms and I know the consequences, but as of Monday, I'll know what is going on...and to be honest, that scares me a little.

On Monday, I'm going in to the (DUN, DUN, DUN) reproductive endocrinologist, which is just fancy talk for...hormone doctor. There are symptoms I'm having, I know, as a result of my hormones being out of whack...the least of which is weird sweating and a sudden goatee...okay it's not that bad, but you know what I mean. Also, this hormone imbalance, I believe, is the root cause of me not being able to get pregnant over the last 15 months.

Infertility can really be a touchy subject. I've never been bitter about it, but I've been angry sometimes. I don't get angry with people, I'm more angry about the fact that I even have to go down this road. It comes and goes. As of right now, I'm pretty much at peace with it. I have a hard time every now and then, but if having another child is not in the cards for me, I'm okay with that. I'm happy with Ethan and our little family.

Sometimes when people are in my "situation" they get what Liz lovingly refers to as "baby rage." Basically, they get mad at anyone who is pregnant or has recently just had a baby because that person has what they want and can't have. I've actually heard of this a lot in talking with people. I've heard of friends and family members being afraid to tell others that they're pregnant because they don't want to hurt the "baby rager's" feelings or incur their wrath. I've personally never been that way. When I find out someone is pregnant, which happens a lot with people I know because of my age, I'm genuinely happy for them...and just a teensy tiny bit sad for me. I'd be lying if I said otherwise...and we all know everyone tells the truth on the Internet.

Personally, I know it's not my time to have a child right now. If that time never comes for me, then I'll be sad, but it will be okay. How could I miss out on Ethan's wonderful little heart by sulking in something that I couldn't change? How could I miss out on his little quirks like adopting his Mega Blocks construction worker guy as his "baby" or him telling me that his blankets "really aren't working" when he gets them tangled up? I couldn't do that to him or to me. Why miss out on something so wonderful. He'll only be this little once.

So, on Monday, I go in to this appointment. I'm hoping they'll at least tell me they can fix me or make the symptoms go away. If I get pregnant, so be it. It's such a relief to let go of that control, or percieved control, that I thought I had over this whole thing. It's in God's hands now. He sent me a beautiful little boy who I'm so grateful for (yes, even when he's making me crazy...okay maybe not in that moment but in reflection later). How could I cheapen that gift by worrying about something that I can't do anything about.

For those women out there who are pregnant right now, I'm so happy for you. You're bringing a little one into this world. You get to help guide and direct him, you get to enjoy him, but most of all you get to love him.

As for me, I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can find out what's wrong with my hormone levels. At least then I'll have an answer...not sure if I want one, that's kind of scary, but I think it will be good.

Chuck E. Cheese's....Where A Kid Can Be A Kid & Mom Can Get A Break

Today was a pretty good day. I got great news from a friend of mine, Ethan and I got out of the house, and we had a great time with Jenny and the kids at Chuck E. Cheese. It was really fun! I was surprised by how much they have that Ethan could actually do. They had tons of games and things that were perfect for his age group. We had a really great time! If you want to see pictures, go here. I forgot my camera and Jenny had hers so she got some cute pics of the kids having a blast.

Ethan ran and played a ton. His favorite game was one where you would try to catch ping pong ball bees and put them in a honey pot. He loved the singing characters on stage...albeit from a distance. He loved that they were singing. I tried to get him to go up closer saying that they were robots and it was okay. He said, "I can't a robot!" and covered his eyes so we ended that there.

It has been rough this winter being cooped up in the house with no way for Ethan to run off his energy...except for running laps around our house. It was so nice to get out and hang with Jenny and the kids. We've all been busy as of late. Now that things have started to calm down a bit and the holidays are over, I'm glad to be somewhat back to the routine of seeing friends again.

All in all, it was a good day.

Change?

Today was the inaguration of President Barack Obama. Did I vote for him? No. Do I think he will destroy the country? No. I don't think any one person has the power to do that. I watched the proceedings today and I listened to his speech. It was a great speech and it was very inspiring. I guess my problem is the tangibles. I'm the kind of person that needs a plan to make things better, not just saying that they will. I need to know how.

I sincerely hope that his presidency is a good one. I think we'll be okay. I don't think he's the savior of our country like some feel though. I don't think one man can make or break the country. The president has power, but not as much as you would think. The power is spread between him, the House of Representatives, and Congress. It's that way for a reason, because one person doesn't always know the right thing to do.

Do I think we should support our new president? Yes. Does supporting him mean I have to agree with everything he does or how he does it? Nope. That's the other problem I've seen. People having this all or nothing attitude. He's our president now. That's not going to change. The best we can do is hope that he will do well and make our opinions known about what is going on.

I think some people...some not all...that voted for him did so because it was the warm and fuzzy thing to do. I think some people voted for him for the wrong reasons without knowing his platform an issues, but you get that with every election. I hope the change is good and the country moves forward from here with a new leader.

I'm just glad the election is over and I don't have to hear from each side arguing every other minute.

Week 2...

I'm having a hard time this week. I was healthier, I exercized more, I lifted weights, etc. I really expected the scale to reflect that, but alas, I only lost one pound. Why is my body holding on so tightly to this fat suit? I'm so sick of it! Hopefully this week will be better and I'll be able to see more of a loss on the scale end of things.

Here's hoping...

Just Drive Up...Have A Coke If You're Thirsty

I decided to write just a bit today. What a day. Nothing really unusual, but a cranky husband combined with not enough sleep equals beating the crap out of him (in my head people...no abuse here) at the gym. After that, I was surprisingly calm...imagine that. Anyway, after my workout Dan went to work and Ethan and I spent time together here at home. We watched American Idol and then...insert dramatic pause here...it was time for his bed time! Oh glorious day! I think you love your children more when they're asleep sometimes...

While surfing the Internet after Ethan went to bed, I found some videos online that some of my friends made in high school that my friend, Mikey, posted on Youtube. I watched a bunch of them and suddenly my mood was just a spark brighter. I was brought back to the days of walking to Sinclair for lunch to get a Coke and a hot dog and when my biggest problem was whether or not I had a ride somewhere. Back in those days, Jenny, Moby, Mikey, and I hung out a lot. I have some really great memories of those times. I'm so glad I found those videos. What a great reminder of the days before mortgage payments, student loans, and kids. All I had to worry about then was boys, Coke, and whether or not my parents would let me take our well worn station wagon on the weekend. I love my life now, but sometimes I really miss those moments. At least they're frozen in time in my memory.

Week 1 Down

Well last week was the first full week of the new year. I have to say that it went pretty well for me. I worked out, made better food choices, and lost seven pounds! I know this will slow down after the first few weeks of being healthy, but I'm going to enjoy it while I can. I'm excited. This time, for me, it's less about losing weight as it is feeling better. I want to feel better. I want to be healthy when I'm old. I want to be able to not be fragile and having arthritis problems when I get older. I think being healthier will accomplish this.

I realized that I haven't posted anything on Christmas or New Year's yet either. We really had a pretty good Christmas. We kept it small this year and Santa brought Ethan some wonderful things. He got a train set that he absolutely loves. He also got boring clothes and jammies from Mom and Dad. He's really starting to grow up. I just wish he would potty train. We're working on that though...hopefully it will be done soon.

On New Year's we went to Jenny and Moby's house. It was fun, so relaxing. The kids played and played. Ethan got to wrestle around with Jack and they both loved it. We played Guitar Hero and ate yummy ham and funeral potatoes that Jenny made. All in all, it was a great night. We had a lot of fun.

Dan is doing well too. He has been working a lot, but what else is new. He's still working less now than when he was working in Home Care though. That's definitely a good thing. 60 hour work weeks combined with full time school was really hard on everyone. He's really liking his job as a nurse at the new Intermountain Medical Center. He works on the cardiac floor, but sometimes gets pulled to help out on other floors if they need him. It has been good for his health too. They did a study and found that nurses walk the equivalent of six miles each shift they work, so you do the math...

Anyway, I guess that's it for now. Once I get my camera downloaded I'll probably be posting those precious Christmas pictures. Until next time...

New Year...Same Resolution

I guess I'm more "resolute" this year. Lately I've not been feeling myself and have been struggling with my depression a bit more. As a result, I've been "using" my drug of choice...food. This isn't a good thing as I've gained weight as a result. Well, I've decided to do something about it. Before, I stopped watching what I was eating because I was "waiting" to get pregnant...well...the waiting has gone on for over a year now and that's long enough. I'm going to get myself in order and maybe a pregnancy will follow later on. At least then I'll be more healthy when I do finally get pregnant.

I'm sick of feeling yucky and I'm sick of indulging in food because I "deserve" it. Food is a necessity for life and it can be enjoyed, but I shouldn't be using it to make me feel better. So, resolutely, I'm heading off into the territory of a healthier me. I hope by publicly declaring it I can do better and keep the goal. We'll see. I think I can do it.

"Innocence"The Savior tells us we need to become as little children to inherit the kingdom of God. I've often wondered what it is about little children Jesus loves most, and I think its their innocence. They are clean slates, seeing the world and others through untarnished eyes. Their hearts are pure, without the baggage of cynicism and self-doubt. In this piece, I've tried to imagine how a child would act upon meeting the Master for the first time. Without reservation or inhibition, I think he would simply want to play with Him. He would be at complete ease, allowing his pure little heart to soak in the love and laughter of His pure, infinite heart. Its no wonder Christ delights in these little ones and sets them up to be our examples.

"Security"One of the greatest human needs is a sense of security. In all aspects of life, we naturally gravitate towards anything that makes us feel safe. In this piece, I wanted to convey a sense of complete peace and calm like only the Savior can provide. It's a security that allows us to rest assured, without fear or worry, when we put ourselves trustingly in His arms. Little children have that inherent kind of trust in their parents, so it's fitting that the man and girl who modeled for "Security" are actually father and daughter. They generatedthe exact feel I was looking for.

"My Child"This piece conveys an intimate, up-close-and-personal feeling of the Savior's love. Notice how all the lines draw your attention and point towards Jesus' face in the center. I chose the name "My Child" because the only thing that could compare (even remotely) to Christ's compassion for us is the love of a parent for his/her child. This image is also intended to put things in perspective. Above all, we are God's children first. He allows us the privelege of experiencing parenthood for ourselves and we are entrusted to be the mothers and fathers of His children here on earth.
